Based on the V6 Cayenne, the Cayenne Hybrid will be available by decade end.
Porsche recently announced that by the end of this decade, a Cayenne Hybrid will be available for environmentally conscience consumers.
Based on the V6 Cayenne, the Cayenne Hybrid will use what Porsche is calling a parallel full hybrid. Instead of branching or splitting the gasoline and electric engines, the electric engine will drop between the V6 and the transmission.
This in-line layout adapts well to the existing Cayenne platform without hindering luggage space or restricting it's all-wheel drive capabilities.
With Cayenne prototypes already on the road, Porsche is getting about 20% better gas mileage than the non-hybrid V6 Cayenne, 24.4 mpg and 17.9 mpg respectively. Porsche hopes to achieve 27 mpg prior to production.
Porsche has been working with VW and Audi on the hybrid system, with similar systems being made available in Touareg's and Q7's soon. In addition, Porsche will be able to offer a V6 hybrid Panamera, the first sedan the German marque has ever produced. According to Motor Trend, the hybrid system is modular and can be installed in a wide range of platforms, probably seeing more active duty in VW and Audi vehices.
Porsche is well on its way to providing fuel efficient options to its model lineup. See my previous posts here and here regarding Porsche's latest battles with the European Union and environmentalist groups.
