 Porsche's Cayenne Turbo
As with all automakers, Porsche has it's own battles with environmentalists who are calling for a reduction in green house gases. And, to Porsche's credit, they have responded quickly. They recently announced plans for a hybrid Cayenne, which should be in showrooms by the end of this decade. Bloomberg.com has an interesting article by Doron Levin where he talks about the possible future of sports cars in Europe, if the global alarmists have their way. If one of the more extreme responses to global warming comes true, driving a sports car anywhere but on a racetrack might be relegated to history's dustbin. And the politicians join in lockstep with the global warming advocates. Chris Davies, a British member of the European Parliament, is proposing one of the most-extreme measures -- a prohibition on any car that goes faster than 162 kilometers (101 miles) an hour, a speed that everything from the humble Honda Civic on up can exceed. He ridiculed fast cars as "boys' toys." If accepted, Davies plan would go into effect in 2013. Why do some elected officials feel they know better and are better qualified to make decisions for us? As more options come available to buyers, they will make choices based on what they feel is best for them. Forcing automakers to meet emission regulations too early will only drive costs up, thus making it less affordable for consumers. Let consumers drive demand, innovation will follow with the price of research and development spread over a period of time the automakers can accept. Being reasonable will benefit everyone.
